Fed?[/caption] What the hell are they talking about? “Really Simple Syndication or RSS” You may want to know this to use it, or you may want to just "get the gist" of what it means. A feed is simply like getting skinny version of a big fat website delivered to you, instead of you visiting it. It is a web entry that likely has this wee symbol near it. ruth It is smashed together to be easy to syndicate ( which really means to share). Stripping the blah blahs: You come across a Web site that has news, or regular posts (like this blog). You want to read those frequently, but you come across about 185 other sites that you also want to follow. Yikes. So much for work, showering or doing laundry. So you "subscribe" to those feeds...but you say, to where do they go? Aha. Until a few months ago, I didn't know myself - and have now become a convert to a Google application called READER.* Go to the "more" button on your Google home page. Click on "Reader." You will need to create a Google password if you don't have one (and you don't have to have a Gmail account - you can use your own email address). Then go to the "add subscription" button to add a feed from Google (a list of choices will then appear well, since Google is Google) OR you can click on that button above on your favorite web sites and those feeds will appear in your Reader. Think of it like a dedicated email in-box just for the stuff you want to read (not spam or emails from your mother-in-law assigning you a dish for the family dinner). What do I feed? I susbcribe to a variety of good friends' blogs like Jessica Hagy's great Venn-diagram mind-games to my alter-ego web analytics partner Dave Culbertson, as well as general national news sites like Wall Street Journal and journalist/bloggers like David Pogue from the New York Times. I get a recipe feed, and also some kid-centric stuff. While I'm a mom and now a blogger, I don't consider myself a mommy blogger - those women have about 250 feeds of other moms blogging about lord knows what. I'm sure I'll revisit the mommy blogger culture in a later post. Just remember FEED means EASY READ. * Because this blog is my opinion, I will choose the application that I have used and like best. It is a photo and video hosting website that was one of the first Web 2.0 applications. When I discussed Shutterfly, that was a part of the Web 1.0 generation, as a closed site (meaning photos were reserved for ordering, viewing and manipulating for those who uploaded them, not the whole community). Flickr is where folks create accounts and post their photographs and videos in public OR private manner. The site runs on a tagging system where users tag their photos with appropriate words for easy searches. People also may choose favorite photos and comment on other photos. It is a community where "micro blogging" and photography cross paths. The site has groups that users create that can range from "corners of my home" to "bicycles and underwear" where folks add to the group pool photos that fit the description (if you happen to have a photo of you biking in your underwear, you have found your home). It is sometimes wild, but always a great glimpse into the human condition. A user can edit with free software and create photo gifts and make prints online with the cool partners of flickr too. Small business owners often use flickr as another online portfolio where they can receive validation and comments about their work. The site is so much more than any other web photo sharing or photo repository. It is a massive community that thrives on creativity. The basic flickr account is free and you just go to flickr.com to sign up. A Pro account costs less than 30.00 a year and provide unlimited hosting and other goodies. Basically, Flickr is another amazing online community and social networking site that really has a major pulse on the web. It is thriving and lives big in the hearts of bloggers and social networking folks. But don't let that scare you from exploring the amazing array of millions of images just for fun. They were struggling to find a local place where they could appropriately scan and organize the boxes of photos he had brought. Not knowing they could do it from their own homes (maybe even him staying in Chicago?) I suggested they try Shutterfly or a similiar photo archiving site like KodakGallery or Snapfish (I've only used Shutterfly). Just last week she told me she's now uploaded all of her photos there (digital and scanned) and is a convert. When I opened my Shutterfly account in 2002, who knew I'd end up saving literally tens of thousands of photos in over 150 albums. Shutterfly is one of several terrific photo management sites that allow you to save, organize, archive, share and produce cool photo books, collages and big and small prints. I don't print individual prints anymore on my printer at home, or even through Shutterfly. Since I suck at traditional scrapbooking, this is the perfect alternative. Every year I organize/design and have printed one master photo book and I look like a rock star when it comes to cropping, collaging, choosing backgrounds, inserting text and more. (SOS is what you write in the sand when you are SOL.)  SMS is actually the fancy acronym for Text Messaging.  It's done on your cell phone (if you have one and get that service).  And it involves sending 160 characters or less to someone else's cell phone.   So what's the big whoop? Texting is an obsession of teenagers and college students. But take note.  Baby boomers are being forced into it by those teens and college-aged kids.   And busy parents like me love it for the efficiency of reaching friends, clients and even the spouse (he just learned to text, it has made for much more efficient marital communiques).  The technology has now advanced where can now text photos you took with your phone (yes, many of them take pictures if you haven't heard) or to your Facebook or My Space page on the web.  You can update your twitter feed.  And you can certainly tell your teenager to get home. Pronto. Just ask your cell phone provider about texting packages with your cell service.   And then learn some of the texting lingo.  Remember when Michael Phelps said that his mom slipped once in a while when she was texting him? The new way to plan or work on a project with numerous peole involved is to work on a web page called a Wiki! A Wiki is a page that allows the folks involved in a project to contribute or modify content and work together without physically meeting or using email. Go to www.pbwiki.com and start now. The idea is that one person starts the Wiki and others can come onto the page and with the click of an edit page button add his or her own ideas. The page becomes a document like magic.  After editing you click the save button and the document transforms into a webpage again and is ready and waiting for a new person to add their informaiton.  It is true collaboration without the headache or time suck of traditional meetings or brainstorming sessions! Watching videos online is the fastest growing activity of all trackable activities on the web (and I'm not sure there is anything untrackable). I typed in "Online TV" into Google (the search engine) and it came up with 114 MILLION responses. In other words, you can safely throw your TV out the window and still catch your favorite soaps - just now on your computer. The other form of online video that is widely popular are self-produced videos that are posted on You Tube. You name it, it's there. Most of them are super short (under 3 minutes) but others are more poignant and worth watching (like the Last Lecture which has been viewed nearly 8 million times). It is best to demo what I'm talking about instead of forcing you to read more words...when you can watch a video. An intro to these two videos I've included: My nephew Will, a freshman in college, has a You Tube "channel" that you can actually subscribe to. So when he posts a new video (for fun or his video classes at college), you'll get a notice of it and can click on the link to watch it. Many people have their own You Tube channels, he's not among an elite crowd. I found a video he took and posted of his sister, my niece, and he titled it "Lydia Flies." With some cool special effects, it does look like she's flying. Now, when I went back to You Tube to find it again to embed the link (in other words, allow you to see it in this post), I typed in "Lydia Flying" by accident. It just used to be that you were amazed some else in the phone book had your same or similar name. Lydia Flying is above, Lydia Flies is below. It is in the most elementary form a social networking site that allows you to talk about yourself. A micro you out there for the web to see. A slice of your day or a window into your business. Twitter allows you to send out "tweets" ( what they call the stuff you type) in 140 character format. Your updates are displayed on your profile page and those on twitter that choose to follow you will view your tweets. You may opt for private tweeting and only give updates to those you choose. You can follow who interests you too! Twitter may be used on line or you may activate the site to send tweets to your phone via text. Twitter is used for a variety of reasons. One obvious use is for entertainment and social networking. It is fun to use the site. You can bookmark favorite random tweets you read for a chuckle later or you can find a new local pal. If you blog it is a great avenue to announce your site and gain readers. Small business owners with on line retail such as Etsy.com will use twitter to announce new products or promos. People even find jobs via tweets. Major companies are on twitter and are reading what you may say about them or others. The political scene is on fire with the application.
